Gourmet coffee sells for $10 to 13 a pound or more in the coffee shop.  Here's what the typical coffee farmer receives for each pound of coffee produced:

  1. .50 to $1.00 per pound sold to middlemen and exporters.

  2. $1.25 to $1.75 per pound sold as Fair Trade Coffee.

  3. $3.50 or more per pound sold as Fair Trade Direct Coffee.

You may be surprised to learn how little the farmers receive under current market conditions.  In many cases this can be less than it costs to produce it!
